COUGH AUDIO TRIAGE FOR TB > About 4-CAGETB

4-CAGETB is an EDCTP-funded project in South Africa, Uganda, Germany, and the Netherlands to validate a cough audio triage signature in primary health facilities and provide evidence on cost and feasibility for adoption. We also strive to deliver an mHealth mobile application based on human-centred design principles, ready for field evaluations in clinical trials to inform adoption.

Project Aims:

The purpose of of 4-CAGETB is to promote the adoption of mobile health (mHealth) based cough audio triage testing for active pulmonary tb in health facilites in high burden settings.

We aim to :

  • Generate and separately validate a cough audio classifier that meets WHO triage test TPP sensitivity and specificity criteria.
  • Produce data on potential cost savings of cough audio app for triage.
  • Package the technology into an easy-to-use smartphone app.
  • Form a foundation for subsequent studies where the app will be evaluated to measure its impact on patient care, to build evidence for global policy change and adoption.

Target Population and Recruitment sites:

Patients aged ≥ 12 years, with a cough of ≥2 weeks, visiting a primary health care facility in Kampala or Cape Town.

Expected Recruitment: Around 1704 participants in Cape Town and 1504 participants in Kampala.

Timeline: The project implementation will run for 4 years starting from July 2022 with three years of recruitment.
