Summary

Tuberculosis is the single biggest infectious cause of death that kills more HIV-positive people than any other disease. TB is caused by the germ Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is spread when people who are sick cough near healthy ones. The disease mainly affects the lungs but can spread and affect other body organs. The emergence of new cases, especially in Africa, may be declining, but the progress is slow. New innovative and ambitious technologies are needed, especially at the triaging areas, to identify new TB cases while minimising costs.

  • It is estimated that 10.8 million people fell ill with TB in 2023, up from 10.7 million in 2022 and in 10.4 million in 2021.
  • Globally, in 2023, there were 1.25 million deaths from TB, down from 1.32 million in 2022 and 1.42 million in 2021. Deaths from TB among people with HIV have been falling steadily for many years. In 2023, the estimated number was 161,000.

TB was probably the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent in 2023. It is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide.

  • Case notification in 2022 and 2023 probably includes a sizeable backlog of people whose diagnosis was delayed by COVID-related disruptions.
